Playing with Windows Live Writer for tagging with WordPress

Share

Windows Live Writer KeywordsI’ve been toying around with Windows Live Writer (WLW) and was trying to figure out how to add tags to my post and have it noticed in WordPress. The key is in the keyword! Assuming you have the advanced section below the post closed, you should see an image of two arrows pointing down. Click on the arrows and this should open up the advanced post options section.

Now in order for your WordPress site to take advantage of tagging you need to be using at least WordPress 2.3 or WordPress MU 1.3 or a blog over at WordPress.com. Your theme should also be updated to display the tags so either go looking for an updated version by the theme author, or checkout this article on the WP Codex. To make sure you can take advantage of WLW and your site, check the source of your homepage and see if you see some code that looks like this in your <HEAD> section:

<link rel="wlwmanifest" type="application/wlwmanifest+xml" href="http://yoursite.com/wp-includes/wlwmanifest.xml" />

If that line is missing then you probably aren’t using a correct version of WordPress. Also of note, if you just upgraded WordPress you might want to update the configuration of you blog in WLW. Just click on the Weblog drop down on the toolbar and choose “Edit Weblog Settings…”, then click on the “Update Account Configuration…” button and you should be on your way.

Ok, now you are all set for tagging in your post. If you look in the advanced section we opened below there is a section titled “Keywords:” and right below that is an area for text input. Just write what you want to use as tags in the Keywords section and because everything should be configured correctly once you publish the post, your tags should show up correctly.

That’s all, happy tagging!

Scribefire – where’s it going?

Share

So anyone have an idea of what the roadmap is for Scribefire, formerly know as Performancing for Firefox? I just downloaded version 1.4 and its getting a little UI overhaul with new colors and a new image. There still seems to be remnants of Performancing, Inc and .com references (theme), Add-ons, and about:config settings.

I’d really love to see some Twitter integration in the future. Feels like this just fits perfectly for posting, not sure about reading though.

Glad to see that you can now add Pages and Categories for WP blogs directly from the editor. Although I can’t see how to create hierarchical categories or pages. Nice to see that you can delete pages, hopefully they’ll add in deleting categories as well.

I did notice that Performancing Metrics seems to have been pulled, which is a shame since the service is coming back to life. However, since Scribefire wasn’t part of the Performancing sale its understandable.

All in all, editor still works well and saves me time from using the built-in Wordpress writing panel. Looking forward to seeing more from this after it being dormant for quite some time. And if you happen to use Wordpress.com, you should check this out if you are looking for an external editor because of the new API uses.
