ShareA year ago today I lost my closest friend. They were with me constantly, through the good times, and bad. Through celebrations and remembrances.
We met in college, at first we didn’t get together too often, but by the time I finished school we saw each other daily. Often I’d give them a ride to and from school, and even bring them to work. We’d study together, and generally just see each other too often. My most favorite times were during our many drives.
But, after all of the above, I can’t say that I’m sad they are no longer around. In fact the times we haven’t seen each other over the past year have been the best. Its been tough at times, especially when they are hanging around with other friends, but I’m better off for it today.
Have you figured it out yet?
A year ago today, I had my last cigarette.
This was my 3rd time that I tried to quit. What worked for me this time was that I had an ultimate goal to reach. When I had my last smoke, as I threw it into the street I said goodbye to it. The moment was like I had just laid to rest a good friend. I’m confident that it was this moment that worked for me.
If you are trying to quit, stick with it. Don’t just quit on a whim because I think the likelihood of success is greater with a goal in mind, just quitting to quit will just bring you back in due time.

I think I’ve been talking about this project since last summer, just not to many people. Well, now its time to talk about it to everyone because I think this is going to be the only way I will actually commit to it.
In less than a month I turn 30. In less than 5 months, my first child will be born. Its time to stop screwing around and get control over my health.
Ever since I stopped landscapping, I’ve let myself fall into a big pile of lard. My weight is upwards of 260 lbs. That’s right, 260 lbs. When I graduated high school I was somewhere around 210 lbs. When I finished college I was probably 230 lbs. Now, 6 some odd years later I’ve put on another 30 lbs.
So what is the point of Project 30? Well, originally it was that I would lose 30 lbs by the time I turned 30. Complete failure. I probably even put on a few pounds since I first started talking about it. No more regrets, now its just time for action.
Project 30 will begin with reaching milestones. The first milestone will be to lose 10 lbs, in 30 days. When I did WeightWatchers about 5 years ago I first weighed in at 254 lbs so I’ve been here before. The problem I had with their program was that to hit my “goal”, which actually was their goal, I had to get down to somewhere within 135 and 165 pounds. If you know me, seen my body frame, that just isn’t possible. My ultimate goal here will be to lose 30 pounds by the time I turn 31, and to be able to run a mile again. I probably could run a mile now, but you’d have to peel me off the pavement. Not a good thought.
I will do my best to keep track of a daily log of food intake and general activity over at my Project 30 blog and check in here with weekly updates on Friday.
Let the fun begin! Let’s hope the picture above is the last of its kind.

ShareI’m really trying to make more mobile tools available to myself. Since there is no decent free application for blogging on the Blackberry I figured out how to setup blogging over email. I’ll have a more detailed post up later, but wanted to play a little bit more before getting that together. Here’s a photo of the cat sitting in a most awkward position trying to fall asleep earlier this morning. Taken with the camera on my Blackberry 8320.

Just got a text from Ken “What once was lost has been found!”. As many of you know, I lost my wedding ring at a Christmas party over at Laura and Ken’s while we were back in Massachusetts. As Cougar was leaving I decided to be a wise-ass and throw a few snowballs at him with Mike D. As we were walking back into the party I realized my ring was missing….
This isn’t the first time a wedding ring has been lost in our clan of “Hey Kids!”. Its actually the 3rd time. Mike D lost his while on his honeymoon. He and Steph were snorkeling off some exotic island in the Caribbean, I think it was the Grand Cayman Island. Mike watched it fall off his finger and he couldn’t grab it.
Last summer, Ken lost his while the clan was taking a canoe trip on the Saco river. I believe it happened while everyone was out in the river throwing around a football. Ken looked down and realized his ring was missing. The guys kept it quiet for a little while before getting the girls down to the river to help look. After 45 minutes and just about to give up, Ken’s brother-in-law, Jim, reached down to sift through some sediment and came up with the ring on his finger.
My story continues… A few of the guys came out to see what was going on outside as we were looking for the ring. I have no idea how the girls didn’t figure out we were up to something, but we pulled it off for about 20 minutes. Finally, I went back inside to keep looking thinking maybe it had fallen off before I was a dumbass. Laura was now sitting where I had been, so I asked her if she could get up cause I needed to look around that area because I lost my ring.
After about an hour of searching, we all gave up. I had killed the mood of the party and the non-local folks had started to leave. I had given up hope, but since it might have been in the snow not all hope was lost. Given the nice little heat wave that’s going on in Mass right now the snow had melted enough to expose that shiny little white gold ring.
So finally my thanks go out to everyone who helped searched and a major thanks to Laura and Ken for continuing to look!
