Reflecting back on the loss of a good friend

Share

A year ago today I lost my closest friend. They were with me constantly, through the good times, and bad. Through celebrations and remembrances.

We met in college, at first we didn’t get together too often, but by the time I finished school we saw each other daily. Often I’d give them a ride to and from school, and even bring them to work. We’d study together, and generally just see each other too often. My most favorite times were during our many drives.

But, after all of the above, I can’t say that I’m sad they are no longer around. In fact the times we haven’t seen each other over the past year have been the best. Its been tough at times, especially when they are hanging around with other friends, but I’m better off for it today.

Have you figured it out yet?

A year ago today, I had my last cigarette.

This was my 3rd time that I tried to quit. What worked for me this time was that I had an ultimate goal to reach. When I had my last smoke, as I threw it into the street I said goodbye to it. The moment was like I had just laid to rest a good friend. I’m confident that it was this moment that worked for me.

If you are trying to quit, stick with it. Don’t just quit on a whim because I think the likelihood of success is greater with a goal in mind, just quitting to quit will just bring you back in due time.
